Detective Steve McCown-Lexington Police Department

Steve grew up in Rush, KY (small town in Boyd Co, KY) until after high school where he attended Kentucky Wesleyan College and played baseball. After 2 years at Kentucky Wesleyan he transferred to EKU where he graduated with a Police Administration degree in 1995.

In 1996 and shortly after graduating, Steve began working at the Fayette County Coroner’s Office, performing death investigations within the county to include Homicides, Suicides, Accidental and Natural Deaths. It was during his time at the Coroner’s Office that Steve determined that his ultimate goal was to transfer over to Lexington Police Department because of his interactions with the Robbery/Homicide Unit detectives during those investigations. Those relationships drove his desire to becoming a homicide investigator.

After close to 10 years at the Fayette County Coroner’s Office, Steve was selected to become an officer with the Lexington Police Department in 2005. After working Patrol in Central Sector, 3rd shift for 5 years, Steve was fortunate enough to obtain a position as a detective in the Robbery Homicide Unit in 2010. Steve worked in the Robbery/Homicide Unit for 8 years working Homicide investigations, as well as numerous other personal crimes. In 2018, Steve transferred into the Intelligence Unit, and is currently assigned as the NIBIN detective within the Unit. Steve works closely with the ATF to disrupt violent gun crime and felonious gun possessors to prosecute them federally as he is a Task Force Officer with the ATF.
With his 10 years at the Fayette County Coroner’s Office and 18 years at the Lexington Police Department/ATF, Steve utilizes a unique background when it comes to conducting investigations to violent crime.

Steve is married to his wife Julie of 28 years and they have 3 children: Mitchell-22, Kellen-19 and Kendall-18. The McCown’s have resided in Lexington for a little shy of 25 years and calls Lexington home. Steve enjoys everything outdoors to include floating the Greenbrier River in WV for smallmouth bass and claims Dale Hollow Lake as his own!

Fun fact….he actually lives in a log cabin on the Kentucky River that he and his father built from the ground up!
