The Role of the Coroner with Jessamine County Kentucky Coroner Michael Hughes | Part 2 of 2 | Tuesday May 2, 2022
I was born in Wheeling, West Virginia and grew up in a small eastern Ohio town across the Ohio River. I moved to eastern Kentucky in 1981 where I met my wife Olivia; and later moved to Jessamine County in 2005.
After serving in the U.S. Navy and being attached to the Marine Corps as a medical corpsman, I entered and graduated from Wheeling College with a Bachelor of Science in Clinical Science. I also attended and graduated from the first Respiratory Therapy program in the upper Ohio Valley.
I ultimately became a Certified and Registered Respiratory Therapist, Registered Pediatric and Adult Cardiac Sonographer, and Registered Vascular Specialist.
I became the Director of Cardiopulmonary Services at two separate hospitals, and simultaneously was a volunteer member of my local fire department. After becoming an EMT-A, I initiated the community’s EMS service.
After moving to Jessamine County, I joined Kentucky Cardiology, PLLC, a Lexington-based Interventional Cardiology Office, where I practice my cardiac and vascular imaging skills as the Technical Director.
As a licensed fixed-wing and rotorcraft pilot, I enjoy flying whenever I get the opportunity; as well as free-fall skydiving which I began doing several years ago.
I am a volunteer member of the Southland Christian Church production team, where Olivia and I are members.
I am currently a volunteer and board member of “Friends of the Animals of Jessamine County, Inc.”, a non-profit animal rescue group. Our mission is to provide care and support to as many abandoned, injured, neglected or homeless animals as we can with the resources available to us. We are staffed by all volunteers, and financed only by donations and contributions.
Both my wife and I are volunteers with “Manna Ministries”, which is a free-meal program located at and sponsored by Nicholasville United Methodist Church, under the direction of Ms. Adele McKinney. This program provides meals every Saturday from 11 am to 1 pm to those with limited income, those who are unable to prepare hot meals at home, children and shut-ins or those with health concerns.
My wife, Olivia, grew up in eastern Kentucky, and attended Morehead State University, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts and MBA degrees while pursuing a double major in Accounting/Finance and Management/Marketing. With her education and experience as a previous owner and operator of a successful medical equipment company, I feel fortunate that she is willing to volunteer her time to serve the Coroner’s office and community.
I am grateful for the opportunity I was given to serve my Jessamine County Family as your Coroner for the last four years, and would love the opportunity to serve for four more years.
