One Night. Five Murders.
“(what) told me right off the bat that it was going to be a bad night, was, Dr. Hunsaker gets up to the body, and he’s got his ditty bag, and amongst things is his camera equipment. And he gets his camera out, and he kinda focuses on a body, but then he immediately brings the camera straight up over his head, and shoots a picture of the full moon that’s over us.” Lead Homicide Investigator Fran Root
On April 23, 1986, officers with the Lexington Police Department in Lexington Kentucky responded to a call of a dead body in town. Within a few hours, another call of a dead body, then another, and more. Four people were located dead, a fifth was taken to a hospital close by and died a short time later. All five dead at the hands of the same suspects.
Listen to an in-depth conversation with lead homicide investigator Fran Root in two episodes we have titled One night. Five Murders.
You will learn how the suspects were identified and located (does luck have a place in an investigation?) and a description of how investigators assembled the timeline of a series of murders, a killing spree, through interview after interview.
Listeners will also get a front row seat to hear how much preparation goes into a trial for a bizarre crime like this, and, the importance of victim advocacy in our criminal justice system.
